Stock Exchanges in India
India has two stock exchanges BSE and NSE. BSE, the Bombay Stock Exchange is older than, NSE, the National Stock Exchange. BSE was founded way back in 1875 as opposed to NSE which was founded in 1992. While BSE is one of the world’s oldest stock exchanges, NSE is one of the world’s latest stock exchanges. Trading wise also BSE is just ahead of NSE in the world and it has also been a host to more stocks than NSE in their total lifespan. Both these stock exchanges have a set of indices that further hold shares under them. You can buy shares, derivatives, currency, etc. using these exchanges. Both exchanges now support the Demat form of security holding as opposed to the certificate system prevalent earlier. Shares get listed on either exchange or can also get listed on both exchanges. Both exchanges were operational even during COVID peaks and continue to run from Monday to Friday throughout the year barring the holidays that are about to be listed down. These dates may change every year depending on the dates of festivals that don’t have a fixed date but other than that the fixed holidays are also a part of this list.
Indian Stock Market Holidays 2023 List
India has festivals around the year so it is always the holiday season somewhere in some part of the country. However, not all holidays are meant for everyone, some are bank holidays, some are holidays for people of a particular region, some are holidays for people of a certain religion, and so on. Among these, there are a few days that are days off for the people who work in the stock exchange. Let us check out their holidays.
January
In the first month of every year, the 26th of January comes as the first holiday apart from Weekends. This holiday is given on the occasion of Republic Day and the market is off for the whole day. It is a Thursday so this is one of those countable holidays that are there in 2023.
February
Next up is Mahashivratri which keeps changing dates. In 2023 this holiday falls on February 18th and so the market will remain closed for the whole day. However, this holiday falls on a Saturday and so it is as good as a wasted one as weekends are any ways off.
March
In the third month, the number of holidays increases as there are two in this month. The first holiday comes on the occasion of Holi which is on the Wednesday of March 8th. The next one is for Ram Navami on the 30th of March which makes it a Thursday holiday.
April
The maximum number of holidays falls in the fourth month with four of them being there. The first one is on Tuesday of 4th April for Mahavir Jayanti. The next three holidays come on consecutive Fridays. April 7th, April 14th, and April 21st are all holidays on account of Good Friday, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti, and Id-ul-Fitr (Ramzan ID).
May
The month of May has only one holiday and it kicks off with that. On Monday, 1st May, the market will remain closed on the account of Maharashtra Day.
June
In June there is just one holiday on the occasion of Bakri Id or Eid ul-Adha which falls on Wednesday of 28th June.
July
One month and one day later after the last holiday, the market will remain closed on July 29th on the occasion of Muharram. However, the holiday falls on a Saturday and becomes another wasted holiday.
August
Even in August, there is just one holiday and that is on the occasion of Independence Day which falls on the 15th. It is a Tuesday and therefore it is an additional holiday.
September
On September 19th on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, the market will be closed. This is the only holiday in September apart from weekends and it falls on a Tuesday.
October
After a long wait, we have another month with more than one holiday. In October the market has two days off. The first holiday is on Monday 2nd October and the second is on Tuesday 24th October for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra respectively.
November
In the second to last month, there are three more holidays. The first one is on 12th November on the occasion of Diwali-Laxmi Puja. On this day the market remains closed at the normal time but opens in the evening for a special Mahurat session. Since it is a Sunday it is a mixed holiday because a holiday is falling on a weekend and yet there will be work to do for the employees. The other two holidays are on Tuesday, November 14, and Monday, November 27 on the occasion of Diwali Balipratipada and Guru Nanak Jayanti.
December

BSE Holidays 2023
Every year there are at least 18 to 20 holidays in a year across the year that the people working in BSE get. In 2022, 5 of these holidays fell on a weekend leaving them with fewer holidays. However, in 2023 things are about to change as only three holidays fall on a weekend. Of those three holidays, one is on the occasion of Diwali – Laxmi Puja. On that day the market is closed for the normal morning session but there is a special evening session so basically only two holidays get wasted. This means BSE holidays 2023 total up to 16 days. Other than this there are 104 Saturdays and Sundays that are anyways off. The holidays can change as per schedule changes. There might be additions or deductions in the number of holidays if need be. NSE Holidays 2023 Mumbai
With NSE the case is not much different. Both stock exchanges in India more or less share similar dates for holidays. This means that the same 120 days are off days for NSE as are for BSE. But again these are just the days on which the equity markets will remain closed, other markets will have their off days which might have some additions and deductions and they will have partial open days and full closed days as well. Trading Holidays 2023
Trading holidays 2023 so far only total up to 19 days of which 16 are on weekdays and the remaining three falls on weekends. This is what the equity calendar reads but the situation is a little different with the other segments. In March the market will remain closed for the morning session on Wednesday, March 8th, and Thursday, March 30th on account of Holi and Ram Navami.

Of this, only on the 7th, the market will be closed for the whole day on the other days it will be closed only for the morning session.
May
On Monday, 1st May, the market will remain closed the whole day on the account of Maharashtra Day.
June
In June on the occasion of Bakri Id / Eid ul-Adha which falls on Wednesday of 28th June, the market will remain closed only for the morning session.
July
On July 29th on the occasion of Muharram, the market will again be closed only for the morning session and will open for the evening session for various segments apart from equity.
August

September
